West Africa
While living in Senegal, Mullins’ work was highly influenced by the country’s history, landscape, culture, and of course the Senegalese people. His use of vibrant colours and his exploration into portraiture during this time helped to define a new period of work. Mullins focused on a number of themes including African wax fabrics depicting ocean waves and intricate doors representing new beginnings, security, and identity. Mullins’ series on the second-hand fashion industry in Western Africa, and its overall effects on the people who produce it, sell it, wear it, and profit from it, was presented at the African Contemporary Art Biennale held in Dakar in 2022.
